Hotel Etico at Mount Victoria Manor is a sumptuous setting for Lumière’s contemporary moving-image artworks. It was built by John R Fairfax, founder of The Sydney Morning Herald, in 1876 as a mountain retreat. Dress up in your finery and join us from 3.30pm on the 22nd April for a Lumière cocktail and discover amazing artworks by MAPBM artists in the manor’s salons, as well as the legendary mirror room. At 4pm, Dharug elder Uncle Chris Tobin will deliver an Acknowledgement of Country and smoking ceremony, reminding us that Lumière is being held on the land of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. Explore the works in the manor, and then join in the magic lantern parade at dusk.

RHOMBOID STUDIO
Composer Alexis Cross, and Scott Brinckley built Rhomboid on their property behind their antiques store Cobweb Collectables, as a soundproof recording studio and performance space. Referencing modernist architecture, it is a truly unique building made of monolithic concrete blocks, and featuring exquisite details such as hand-forged large-scale door handles and vintage coloured-glass bottles set into the mortar of its internal walls. The space also houses a fully-restored 1895 Steinway grand piano.
Their antique shop will be open prior to and after the performances. Discover a magical treasure to take home with you.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE
SAFETY ADVICE TO ACCESS RHOMBOID Due to the dangerous GWH road bend, please only approach Rhomboid via Station St traffic light intersection, crossing over at the lights towards the old post office. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAY anywhere except at the traffic lights (corner GWH and Station St). Follow the pedestrian footpath leading East from the traffic lights/old post office (7 min walk). You may need a torch in some sections as street lights are sporadic. Return by the reverse route, do not be tempted to cross the Highway, except at the Post Office traffic lights. An usher will meet you at the carpark entrance and lead you safely to and from the performance space. Suitable footwear should be worn as there is some uneven ground.
These performances will be documented both on video, and with a still camera, and shown later online. Please let us know in advance if you don’t wish to be filmed.
For the performances on the 24th, tickets are strictly limited to 60 seats and 10 children on cushions on the carpeted floor.
Fiona Davies’ event on the 30th is limited to 60 people.
We regret due to it’s off-road site, access to Rhomboid performance space is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.
PARKING: The carpark is now FULL. Alternative on-street parking is available nearby in Station St and Harley Ave, or at Mount Victoria Train Station (10mins)

We thank Alexis Cross and Scott Brinckley, the Artists, the Australian National University, MAPBM Vice-President Sheona White, Jon Flood (sound mixing), Rachel Peachey & Paul Mosig (filming), and Hotel Etico for making the performances possible.

Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip To The Moon)
Georges Méliès 1902 12mins
This famous film is considered to be the first science-fiction film in cinematic history. A group of astronomers in constellation-covered robes decide to construct a rocket and travel to the Moon. They land in the poor man-in’the-moon’s eye, and set off to explore the Moon's surface. They encounter strange moon inhabitants called Selenites, and return to Earth, bringing one back home in their rocket. Originally silent - before the ‘talkies’ were invented - screenings of the original film would have been accompanied by a live musician on piano, who would add drama and emotion to the story. This version’s soundtrack is by David Short & the Billi Brass Quintet
